Modern façade and roof constructions with photovoltaic panels

    Get PDF
Glass as a building material is used in a multitude of new applications like modernglass facades or roof constructions. Important points in these times are acontribution to a positive energy balance. So the application of solar panelsbecomes more and more important. Until now most applications are standardapplications with framed panels on roofs or installations on fields. More and moreattractive applications from the architectural point of view are built or are underconstruction. There are on the one hand side different techniques to combine thephotovoltaic element with the glass pane. The possible glass sizes are increasing, sothere are many new ways of application. On the other hand side there are differentpossibilities of the fixing of the solar panel: Linear or in points. First some basicsabout the topics glass and solar are explained. The "traditional" systems for fixingof solar panels and also new systems are presented very short. In addition technicalaspects like principle design rules, static calculation of solar panels and substructureare presented. Built examples with solar panels are presented

A new Façade Concept for an Existing Office Building

In this paper a case study is presented relating to the redesign of an office buildingdating from the 1960s. Especially the detailing and the structural complexity ofdesigning the new double skin façade are described. The building consists of a twostoreypodium topped by a nine-storey tower, the overall height is 40m aboveground level. In order to optimise the building's energy efficiency and present thepublic a modern appearance the whole building is completely renovated. Theexisting building envelope which mainly consisted of prefabricated concreteelements was dismantled and is now replaced by a transparent floor to floor doubleskin façade. Within the renovation two new storeys (12th and 13th floor) are added

SUIZA FOODS CORPORATION: BEST MANAGEMENT STRATEGY IN THE FLUID MILK INDUSTRY

    Get PDF
Suiza Foods has rapidly grown to become the largest company in the U.S. fluid milk industry. This teaching case is designed to familiarize students with the challenges which confront Suiza in its quest for further growth and, in turn, high profitability. Interviews with top executives describe the history of Suiza as well as the rationale behind Suiza's strategies. Information is presented on both economic and financial trends so as to allow the student to asses Suiza's past, present and future performance.Agribusiness, Livestock Production/Industries,

Glasgow's Stereo Image Database of Garments

To provide insight into cloth perception and manipulation with an active binocular robotic vision system, we compiled a database of 80 stereo-pair colour images with corresponding horizontal and vertical disparity maps and mask annotations, for 3D garment point cloud rendering has been created and released. The stereo-image garment database is part of research conducted under the EU-FP7 Clothes Perception and Manipulation (CloPeMa) project and belongs to a wider database collection released through CloPeMa (www.clopema.eu). This database is based on 16 different off-the-shelve garments. Each garment has been imaged in five different pose configurations on the project's binocular robot head. A full copy of the database is made available for scientific research only at https://sites.google.com/site/ugstereodatabase/.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure, image databas

A Bearingless Switched-Reluctance Motor for High Specific Power Applications

    Get PDF
A 12-8 switched-reluctance motor (SRM) is studied in bearingless (or self-levitated) operation with coil currents limited to the linear region to avoid magnetic saturation. The required motoring and levitating currents are summed and go into a single motor coil per pole to obtain the highest power output of the motor by having more space for motor coil winding. Two controllers are investigated for the bearingless SRM operation. First, a model-based controller using the radial force, which is adjusted by a factor derived from finite element analysis, is presented. Then a simple and practical observation-based controller using a PD (proportional-derivative) control algorithm is presented. Both controllers were experimentally demonstrated to 6500 rpm. This paper reports the initial efforts toward eventual self levitation of a SRM operating into strong magnetic core saturation at liquid nitrogen temperature
